Clear, visual stories about the borders, regions, political decisions and forgotten turning points that shaped today's map.
Saxony-Anhalt was assembled from provinces, a former duchy, and scattered enclaves, then dissolved and restored. Its history reveals how occupation, administration, and political compromise can create a state.
For nearly two centuries, the Suebi ruled a kingdom in modern Galicia and northern Portugal. Its story begins with the collapse of Rome and ends with a legacy still visible in place names, language, and the history of the Swabians.
Rhineland-Palatinate was assembled from regions with different histories, identities, and former rulers. Its survival shows how political borders can eventually create a sense of belonging.
A dispute over defense spending, military bases, and the Iran war has exposed a legal gap at the heart of NATO: the alliance has a route for withdrawal, but no clear process for suspending or expelling a member.
Salzburg changed hands repeatedly during Europe’s Napoleonic upheavals, leaving a divided borderland, Bavarian forests in Austria, and a 1921 vote for union with Germany that changed nothing.
Eastern Turkey is vast, mountainous, and rich in history, yet its provinces are losing residents year after year. The reasons reach far beyond harsh winters: jobs, migration routes, infrastructure, and conflict have reshaped the region.
After decades of division, Cyprus may be moving back toward negotiations. A new political opening, confidence-building measures and a proposed 5+1 format could revive the search for a federal settlement—but major security and sovereignty disputes remain.
Hessen was not created by centuries of local unity, but by postwar American administration. Its story runs from divided dynasties and Hessian soldiers in the American Revolution to democracy, Frankfurt’s lost capital bid, and the birth of modern Hessen.
For just seventy days in 1946, Hannover existed as a German state with its own government, parliament, symbols, and capital. Its rapid creation and disappearance reveal the political bargains behind postwar Germany’s federal map—and the limits of popular votes to redraw it.
With 5.1 million residents, 53 cities and a powerful regional identity, the Ruhr is large enough to be a German state. Yet it is divided among several administrative authorities. The reason lies in postwar strategy, the Cold War and the political difficulty of changing the map.
